An explosive compound like the one found in Las Vegas mass shooter Stephen Paddock’s car and home is believed to have been used last year in an alleged terrorist bombing in New York City.
Authorities say they recovered an undisclosed amount of the compound known as Tannerite from Paddock’s home in Mesquite and 50 pounds from his car parked at Mandalay Bay, where he used high-powered firearms to mow down concertgoers at the adjacent Route 91 Harvest festival on Sunday.
Police have not said why the 64-year-old Paddock possessed Tannerite, which is unregulated and legally used by marksmen to create targets that emit a small cloud of smoke when they are struck. Authorities also found ammonium nitrate, another ingredient that can be used to build bombs, in his vehicle at the site of the shooting.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives notes that products like Tannerite are binary, meaning they consist of two separate components that are inert when separated. “But when mixed, they are high explosives and should be treated with caution and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions,” the agency noted in a 2015 safety advisory.

Tannerite apparently was used in a September 2016 bombing in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood that injured 31 people. Various news accounts at the time quoted unidentified federal officials as saying that residue of the product was found at the scene.
Authorities later arrested Ahmed Rahami, an Afghan immigrant, and charged him with federal terrorism and weapons offenses in connection with that bombing and two others in New Jersey.
According to prosecutors, Rahami had posted videos praising a former leader of the al-Qaida terrorist group and decrying U.S. military actions in countries like Afghanistan and Syria on social media prior to his arrest.

All you baws that have been playing around with tannerite are about to be put on a list.

I was pretty shocked when I saw a huge tannerite display at Academy Sports a few months ago. Crazy anyone can go in and buy that stuff.

Tannerite is commonly available over the open market and unregulated, so this is a stretch attempting to tie his possession of it to an attack that happened utilizing the same substance...
If he had had a couple of pressure cookers in his room would that have tied him to the Boston Marathon bombing?

Just a matter of time before Tannerite is banned. Too many You Tube videos of people putting massive amounts of this stuff into barrels and blowing up hogs and other stuff.
Tannerite was doomed a few years ago but just didn't know it. Buy it while you can.

Yeah. This is interesting but nowhere close to proving a connection. Is there chemical variability with tannerite that might prove when and where it was produced?

I am sure there has to be some but I am not certain if it could be traced since it is unregulated. I would expect it to be off the market shortly...

Farmers use it all of the time, but I don;t know what they have to go through to obtain it.

This is the first time I've seen Tannerite used or mentioned in a situation other than some good ole baws blowing shite up for fun in fields.
I don't think this is the connection you're looking for.

Not sure the quantity but yes it is tracked and regulated. Many small farmer moved away from it because of the list and reporting issues...

I think anyone can still buy it, but there are limits. I think over 25 pounds there's a background check and a waiting period.

Extremely regulated and much much much harder to get. Most agricultural uses have been replaced by Urea. Urea is used to make diesel and it is also a good fertilizer. Urea was really pushed forward by the U.S. government after the OKC bombing. About $1.29 per pound so pretty cheap.
Urea cannot be used to create an explosive.

I bought 1 lb. of ammonium nitrate from the local feed and seed to put on my garden corn and I had to sign my name on a form to get it.
