The protest is meant to be disrespectful. That's it's purpose. To pretend otherwise is dishonest.
Everyone knows that the cause for which they protest for isn't directly aimed at the anthem. That's a big part of why the protesters are made fun of and ridiculed. It's completely misplaced.
But, you don't get to be intentionally disrespectful to something that is "sacred" to a large number of people, and then say "but my real reasons for disrespect are good ones".
It's amazing to me that this concept stumps liberals.

Everyone with a brain knows it's not about disrespecting the flag. However, some people actually believe the action of taking a knee during the anthem is disrespecting the flag. Intentional or not.
I don't see how the knee supporters don't see this.
I'm not anti-protest. I rather liked what the Cowboys did last night. That got more positive attention from both sides than kneeing during the anthem did.

He's a big deal in Dallas and has gained the national spotlight at times.
For the most part, he's a good sports commentator. But here and there he jumps on his high horse and does segments like this.

It's very simple. If it's not about disrespecting the flag and the anthem, then why do it during the anthem. Why not do it coming out of the tunnel? Or any other time?
