Like many I was about ready to write off Jenkins going into this season. He looks like a different player under Ryan. There is still a bad angle of arm tackle now and then but overall he has been making plays. I was considering posting about it then read some good stuff from Larry Holder that addressed this-

He's been one of the key pieces to the defense's resurgence, proving that 2012's struggles weren't indicative of his talents. Coordinator Rob Ryan continues to place the 2009 first-round pick in positions to succeed and help the defense.
In some alignments Jenkins might play his traditional center-field position. On others he might line up closer to the line of scrimmage as a nickel cornerback or blitzer.

The results through six games? Twenty-nine total tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass defenses.

Jenkins has become a playmaker once again.

The Saints have always been high on Jenkins' intelligence and intangibles. His improved play should make it a no-brainer for the Saints to re-sign Jenkins in the offseason. A franchise tag won't be in order, but Jenkins likely will receive a contract at least similar to the one Roman Harper signed a few years ago (four years, $28.5 million maximum).

What say ye?

He's really been best in the nickel role honestly

I wanted this guy gone the last two years. Was warm poo.
Well damn if crow don't taste too bad. Ryan has really seen where and how to play him. Congrats to both he and Mal

(four years, $28.5 million maximum).

What say ye?

In our current cap situation I would hope not but Ryan will make that call I would think.

I love Malc. The guy will be a solid player for all of his career. Well worth the investment; especially with the way CRR has been using him. He's playing his stengths, and it's showing.

If he gets a good deal, he should give Vaccaro a cut.

He proved me wrong.

And I'm really happy about that.

Im still wondering what I'm missing reading all of y'alls responses. Sure the guy has a new found role playing close to the line and blitzing, which he is doing quite well these last 2 weeks in particular, but in coverage he is still found trailing behind receivers playing catch up, and still shoddy at tackling in the open field. Do we just replace Harper with Jenkins, in the sense that Harper's in the box run support tackling and blitzing role is now Jenkins'?

His coverage and tackling have improved.

And he blitzes well.

I'm not sure what Harper brings to the table that he doesn't.

I haven't seen any decline in the defense without Harper. Maybe I'm missing it though?

Seems whatever role Harper plays has been filled just fine by Jenkins, Vaccaro, Bush, etc.

Contract year. I like his play this year but I REALLY hope the Saints don't outbid themselves and overpay him as they tend to do (Harper, Grant, Smith, Vilma, etc)

There hasn't been a drop off. Just that Jenkins and Harper were two different Safety positions, in a nickle it all works out though not having Harper. You have to keep in mind they will be required to drop into coverage at some point, and Harper on any good Tight End is a matchup nightmare for us.

I still fear when a team goes 5 wide and Jenkins has to handle a slot receiver and not some Running Back or slow Tight End. As others have stated, please don't over pay for Jenkins. He has showed he can play well in a specific role, but manning the back end of the defense playing center field is a huge weakness of his, so yes keep him near the line.

I say 4yr/24mil would be a good number.

He's never been a great FS, but I think he'd be a better SS in harper's role.
