Pretty much qualified as ´meh´ by all.

Nevertheless, the album has one of the greatest songs of all time

Hand of Fate

and

Hot Stuff was spot on, for that time period. At least for Europe and New York. The disco song from Some Girls got it for the entire US, but that was probably three, maybe four years later, correct me Kafka.

Hey Negrita, mmh, well, they were in Jamaica, but Crazy Mama is a fantastic tune as well.

Cherry Oh Baby, a nod to what they felt they had discovered, is pretty sad, but lots, I mean LOTS, freak out to Fool to Cry and Memory Motel. Memory Motel is the favorite (favourite) Stones song for ALOT of limeys.

Did this album get hammered because of the incredibly unattainable level of Exile, and the two posterior albums which were really good, but paled in the shadow of a masterpiece?

Wow, I´m sounding like a Stones freak, and believe me, I´m not, I respect them tremendously, but, the stars, the stars (methinks).

I get it, Melody with Billy killed it for everyone.

Random songs, between Exile and Some Girls.

Star Star. Wow. This era is when it got murky. Alot of songs sounded like they belonged to certain albums. It was clear that the Glimmer Twins were pulling shite and diamonds out of the can since Sticky Fingers.

Mick Taylor had quit, and they really didn't seem to have any focus. It almost sounds like Mick and Keith were indulging in some of the genres that were about to become hugely popular in the next few years while they tried out guitarists. No question though, that it was a let down for Stones fans.

Wayne Perkins solo in hand of fate is perfect. He obviously didn't get the full time gig, and later his band Crimson Tide played some raft float festival in montgomery. As snot nosed kids when we met him we felt like we had met a Stone

It was an album full of songs while they tried out new guitarists to replace Mick Taylor (and, imho, they have never attained the quality since). As a result, the album is unsurprisingly, inconsistent, but does have a few gems (agree with Hand of Fate).

That would have gotten Mick an 8 match ban in the EPL...

Good post Lion.

Hot Stuff was a good song and the live version on Love YOu Live is pretty good.

I think Hand of Fate is such an underrated song and Memory Motel was excellent as well.

One of favorite Stones songs, Worried About You, was recorded during the Black and Blue sessions with Perkins giving it a nice solo. Here is the boot recorded during the session: Worried About You B&B sessions

If you look on youtube, you can find other boots recorded then.

Worried - released version on Tattoo You

With all of this said, I think Mick Taylor was very important to the band and probably their best true guitarist

By the same token, you could say Brian Jones was underrated...

Ok, I have always loved this album.
Heavy on jams, but not the most cohesive Stones album.
It was all over the place and largely succeeded.

And "Hey Negrita" is a great cut, especially Charlie's contribution which I think is perfect and all Wood's guitar work.
There's a lot of funk in that tune too.
Preston's piano is killer especially in relation to Watt's drums.
That little jam at the 2:45 minute mark is one of my favorite moments on the album.
