Why would a starting QB leave a program to take a backup role at another?

Just looking for options

I’m seeing a lot of starting quarterbacks leave their programs for example Swann coming to LSU, just to be a back up
Never mind answered my question…NIL

Oklahoma State in 2023: Spencer Sanders
Left to play as a backup at Ole Miss behind Dart.

Well, that and the fact that all programs aren't equal. Being a backup at LSU gives you more pub than a starter at Vandy. Plus, God forbid if Nussmeier gets hurt, you then have a chance to become the starter at what should be a playoff caliber team instead of perhaps still being a starter at a bottom feeder SEC program in Vanderbilt. Makes a ton of sense to me.

Might be wanting to coach after graduating, looking for better opportunities.
He probably realizes his limitations.

The guy should not even be on the team talent wise but he has “experience”.

Spencer Sanders and AJ Swann had different situations.
Sanders fricked up and thought there was more of a market for him when he entered. He tried to go back to OSU but they said no thanks. So then he was looking for anywhere that would take him and I’m sure Lane said he’d let him at least compete for the job.
Swan (I’m guessing) realized he’s the QB of the whipping boy of the SEC. He probably 1. Wanted to finish out his career on a contender and experience playing at a real football school, even just as a backup. 2. Realized he could be only an injury away from being the starting QB of a major program.

IIRC Swann had lost his job and was not the starter anymore.

Nope. Bad take
Ever heard of Jay Cutler? Pretty sure he had a more noteworthy career and was more noticed by scouts than a guy like Marcus Randall from the same time period. Playing time trumps everything else.

You watch the spring game? He’s better than Collins

No, that would be talent.

Easier than explaining to your hometown boys why you’re at a juco

In case of Max Johnson, probably because he knew everyone else was better than him.

That’s analogous to leaving your job to take a pay cut somewhere else…it is done all the time for better work environment, more earning potential later, a job that you are happier doing, etc.
