Christmas in Vermont

Wife wants to do the Hallmark type Christmas trip. I'm thinking of flying into Burlington while also trying to hit Stowe and Woodstock. Any tips on places to stay and must do's are appreciated.

You’re on the right track picking Stowe and Woodstock. Idyllic spots for a Vermont Christmas.
For Woodstock, look at the Woodstock Inn & Resort. That’s our favorite spot. If you’re trying for something a little cheaper, the Kedron Valley Inn is another good option.
Edit: I’ve never stayed at the Lincoln Inn & Restaurant at the Covered Bridge, but we have eaten there. It’s incredible and the story behind how they got started is really interesting. They only do one seating, 3-4 nights a week, and there are maybe 7 tables total.

Are you looking to do any activities? Ski? Snowshoe? Just R&R?
If you pick one place and it's Woodstock also look into the Manchester airport. It's about the same distance from either BTV or MHT to Woodstock. Also, Manchester, VT is on a similar level as Woodstock though Woodstock has a real pretty idyllic main street. Other towns to consider are Waterbury, Waitsfield, and Warren.

If you decide to stay in Stowe, Edson Hill is high class. We've stayed 2x and have some recs for food, sites, etc. that I could type up for around Stowe.

Thank you all for the great tips so far. I'm thinking 2 nights in each town, is that enough? too much?
-For Woodstock I'm looking at the Inn or the Woodstocker B&B. That Lincoln Inn dinner looks fantastic. Since Stowe is a ski town I'm sure the roads will be fine between Burlington and there, but do you think getting to Woodstock from Burlington will present any problems? Plan on renting an AWD SUV.
-In Stowe we would definitely look at some outdoor activities. Probably not skiing, but snow shoeing, snow mobiles, and the wife even mentioned maybe dog sledding. Edson Hill definitely looks great. Was looking at the Von Trapp place but not sure if it's a good place to stay or just a good place to visit.

Not to try and hijack your plans but do some googling on Leavenworth, Washington as well. Picturesque Christmas town with tons of activities also.

Edson Hill is a great choice. A lot of people like staying at Trapp for accessibility to trails for summer/winter activities. I've never stayed, but I usually go for some beers von Trapp Brewery. Fantastic traditional lagers.
You also might consider one of the hotels closer to Waterbury. Not too much of a drive to Stowe, and you have your choice of good restaurants and craft beer bars. Sort of my preference, but to each his own.

Went to HS in Burlington, so Chittenden County is a part of Vermont that I'm more familiar. I'd caution that it can get pretty cold with the wind coming off Lake Champlain, but Church Street is beautiful with the Christmas lights and cobblestone walk. Burlington has done a great job continuing to build out restaurants and bars, especially with UVM right there. Really nice campus, too, if you want to walk through it.
Hotel Vermont is a good option - right next to Hen of the Wood Burlington location and walking distance to Waterfront Park. Incredible sunsets over The Adirondacks.

We went up to the Von Trapp lodge last time we were there to look around. It didn't really impress us. Seemed a little dirty and not updated. A couple of the rooms in the guesthouses have wood burning fireplaces and soaking tubs. Evenings with a fire going, alcoholic beverage of choice, and a hot bath are divine. Also, fantastic breakfast included in the price of the stay each morning.

I stayed at the Lang House in Burlington a couple of years ago. It's a B&B in a Queen Anne house about 3 blocks up the hill from Church Street. Nice place and they use local ingredients for their breakfasts (not like that isn't found everywhere in Burlington).

I recently spent a night at the Victoria Inn in Chester, VT (as part of the Vermont Inn-to-Inn Walking Tour). The innkeeper mentioned that a Hallmark movie was filmed in their town years ago, in case you want a true Hallmark town. It was close to Weston, where the Vermont Country Store is found. It was all really cute and your wife would probably love it.

Have done family VT trip over Christmas twice in recent years, and both times we stayed near Stowe. Stowe IMO is definitely the right choice for the home base..but my advice would be to focus more on finding an ideal Christmas ("Hallmark") house/cabin for your group, thats within even 15-20 minutes of town-
the kind of place where you've got mountain views out the windows, maybe an outdoor firepit/patio (weather permitting), a comfortable living room with a nice fireplace and TV (Christmas movies..or football), and plenty of room for a tree (which you can easily find at a local tree farm)
Once you've got a house booked that everyone is excited about, the rest becomes pretty easy....can spend a little of each day in Stowe (dinner, shopping, walking around etc)..and also venture to places like Burlington and even Woodstock/Killington if you so choose.
On the most recent trip we did Stowe house for 3-4 nights, then on the 26th (this is pre-covid BS) we drove up to Montreal for a a few nights ... there and/or Boston are both great add-ons if you can make the flights and rental car logistics work.
