He’s divisive for sure among USMNT fans.

I’m in the camp that he is not athletic enough to start alongside Zimmerman, who is all but a nailed on starter for Qatar. Add to that Long has the turning radius of a cruise ship. That being said he is a big presence and good in the air.

Who do y’all see as the other starting CB next to Zimmerman vs Wales to open the World Cup?

Chris Richards, EPB, Mark Mckenzie, CCV?

Richards is far and away the choice, with Long and McKenzie as the only semi-suitable backups.

CCV and EPB can't start alongside Zimmerman, they are both too slow. CCV though showed this camp that if Zimmerman is injured, he can fill that RCB role nicely. I think he took a giant step towards Qatar this camp.

Not a good pairing with Zimmerman.

The Achilles really seemed to kill Long’s career. He was our best defender for a stretch and was gaining traction for a move to the EPL, but then he got hurt. At this point, he doesn’t seem like a viable option to start in Qatar, and as others said, the clear choice is Richards.

Afraid the same thing will happen with Miles Robinson unfortunately.

Long doesn’t haven’t the progressive passing we need. I actually think his athleticism is fine. I would prefer to see CCV, Richards, or Brooks starting next to Zimmerman, but if I had to put money on it I think it’s probably CCV come the first game of the WC.

It's still a good bit away, but CCV may be the only one in that group currently playing (and starting) every game including Champions League. If he's playing well and in form there's no way he sits.

I actually really like what I have seen from CCV re: his positioning and willingness to step forward with the ball at his feet to create passing lanes.

Creating those lanes and making line-breaking passes are what makes Zimmerman such a good fit for this system. If CCV can pick up that line-breaking trait and we can be clinical in front of goal, we will have a lot of teams on their heels in Qatar.

This is the current knock on Brooks (if you assume its just about form) without Brooks ability to make forward passes. As high up as we will push our FBs, I don't see how you can play both Brooks/Long and Zimmerman. Robinson's injury really screwed us as it completely tore apart our depth. Hoping Richards will be healthy enough to step in as he is our best hope with his athleticism.

I was impressed with CCV, he looked very calm on the ball which can't be said for some of our other CBs. EPB getting a knock limited what we were able to see from him. In his brief appearance he didn't shower himself in glory but wasn't a huge liability.

Was Mckenzie even playing for his club at the end of the season?

Yes, he started in pretty much every match for Genk down the stretch, but that was after barely playing at all for more than a month.
