Yes & Walsh during that time benched Montana several times in favor of Young because Walsh felt at times Montana was declining due to injuries.

Montana started the majority of games and there was a brief QB controversy but Montona took control of the job and didn’t give it up till he was injured the majority of 91-92.

Montana was the super bowl MVP 89.

He was lucky Young didn’t put it together in Tampa Bay, and he could get him for a decent trade.

It was a lot closer to becoming a reality than you realize. Do you even know KC traded up with Buffalo to get in front of the Saints @ #10 because Andy Reid knew Payton would take Mahomes @ #11?

Ok but he wasn’t there at 11. So who was supposed to be the replacement?

There was nothing brief about the controversy despite Montana's on the field success. It was there behind the scenes from the day Young was traded for, to the day that Montana was traded away. The situation was very similar to what Rodgers & Green Bay are going through except the 49ers saga played out much longer. You need to do more reading up on this situation from Young's, Walsh's & Montana's perspective. Also, any 49er fan from that era would also know.

You know why? It's because Bill Walsh walked away after the 1988 season & George Seifert took over. Montana didn't have the pressure of Walsh trying to replace him with Young that season but Walsh had already planted the seed of replacing Montana with Young in Eddie DeBartolo's head prior to him walking away. That's why it eventually ended up happening even though Walsh was no longer with the organization.

Walsh battled with severe anxiety. He was an overthinker & worrier. When GMs began to approach Paul Brown about hiring Walsh as a head coach, Brown warned them all about that. Brown told them he's a great offensive mind but his overthinking & drive for perfection would cause him to burn out fairly quickly. Brown was spot on.

Tampa Bay was a shite organization at the time. Young was never going to put it together there which is why Bo Jackson spurned the Bucs as well.

First off, you make it seem like the Saints had no plan or intentions to draft Brees replacement when they obviously did. Payton's comments leading up to the draft & since then tell you all you need to know. He did an interview with Mike Florio prior the Super Bowl in 19-20 where Florio asked him about Mahomes & how close the Saints were to drafting him. Payton spoke about the multiple times they flew him to Airline Drive for private workouts. He also said that Mahomes was their highest rated player of any position since he had been head coach of the Saints.
