Moved from MS to Louisiana. I have a 2018 f150. Any idea what the tag/registration is going to cost me? I’ve looked online and can’t make sense of it. Just looking for a ballpark figure.

I thought LA requires you to pay sales tax when you register it even if you paid taxes when you bought it out of state. If that is the case that is total bs

How do I know if I am exempt or not? I tried to do it last week (didn’t have title so I had to come back later) and the lady at the DMV told me that I would have to pay 3% of the value of the vehicle plus like $150 for the actual tag. And I was like wtf? Why? I’m just really confused by all this. MS is much simpler.

You have to pay a road use tax on the value of the car at the time you register it in Louisiana, but you get a credit for the percentage tax you paid for it in the state you bought it, as long as that that state has a similar policy for vehicles purchased in Louisiana and then titled there.

From what I'm seeing, state tax something like 4%, plus any local taxes on top of that. It looks like your rate is 8% (4% state, 4% local) and you get a credit of 5% because that's what you paid in Mississippi, so you now have to pay 3% plus registration costs.

Louisiana sales taxes suck. If they didn't do this, people would just buy all their cars out of state.

What is the sales tax rate in MS? We moved to LA from TX. The sales tax there for vehicles is 6.5%. It's something like 10% in LA. So we had to pay the 3.5% difference on the book value of our vehicles.
