1.How to read a ruler. 2.Cursive. 3.How to read a clock with hour and minute hands. These are all taught in public elementary schools here in Kentucky.
So there is some hope!
We have created a society where a high school graduate cannot perform the most basic arithmetic without a smartphone, has very little knowledge committed to memory. I ham thankful my kids are old enough to be able to function well in day to day life even if their phone is dead.

My 4th grader has better cursive than the 7th grader b/c he hasn't used it since 3rd/4th grade.
Same with my 6th grader.
She only writes in cursive if she’s writing multiple paragraphs, and usually she has to type when she’s writing that much.

How to address envelopes.
They can just google this. Its good to know, but if you have access to google I guess it doesn't have to be taught.

Reading an analog clock is taught for a brief unit in 2nd grade and then never mentioned again. By the time they get to me in 5th grade they have forgotten it mostly.
Likewise there is a brief unit on money and then never brought up again. (counting out change is gone forever though)
GEOGRAPHY!!! For years I've played geography trivia games with 5th graders when there were a few extra minutes. Over the years it is SHOCKING how little they know of the world and the US states. I kid you not, I would say "what state is north of (insert a state such as New York) and I get answers like "Canada", "mexico". One didn't know New Mexico was a state. They think Africa is a country. They can't name a country in Europe. It is shocking.

Clearly you were taught about the oil industry since everyone here are idiots for not understanding it, can you break it down for us?

oh and about cursive writing---there are studies showing that it is beneficial to brain development using cursive.

It’s the same as the effect of music lessons improving math abilities, but using some of the same logic from this thread, if you can access all the music you want with a smart phone, what’s the point of teaching music!

I got paddled by the principal for lying to my 1st grade teacher. This was 1994.
That would never happen today.
I got paddled in 1981 by Mr Wilkins for breaking the yard stick that my 1st grade teacher used to whip us. I don’t even think my parents found out. Think how ridiculous that sounds by today’s standards.

What really is the point of cursive
Was taught it in second grade
Told it was mandatory from now on
Was enforced in third grade
I know once I was in high school I didn’t write like that. And I know very few people who wrote in cursive as an adult.

I think they’re actually bringing this back
Cursive has returned to elementary curriculum because the students could not read countless documents.
