I remember thinking I would never see an LSU national championship in football. It just seemed unattainable to me. Then 2003 happened and I have been spoiled by that success ever since.

100% agree with that take Jon

The hilarious part is there was a significant part of our fanbase that thought miles was equal to if not better than saban in the 2009-2011 timeframe

My first game was 1960 as a 10 year old. We beat Miss St 7-3, and I imagined it was as a year earlier when we beat Ole Miss. I had never heard such noise, though it couldn’t have been as much as a year earlier. I’ve been to games every year since except a couple of years I was at Vanderbilt. I have seen some dramatic and stirring football in that time. There have been countless dramatic moments seared into my memory. National titles are inspirational, but they’re not a necessity. What stirs you is the knowledge of how your opponents fear you and your stadium. And a year like the current one? It only allows you to appreciate the good years even more. All teams have them. The years for Alabama after Coach Bryant were hard until Saban came along. The years after Saban will be hard as well, and we can look forward to them.

I have to ask just how old you are to think this?
Coach Mac was a world class coach. I know we can play "what if" all day long, but just take the 1962 season - Ole Miss was undefeated for the year and finished #3 - if LSU had gotten a break or two in that game and the Rice tie and finished undefeated, it would have been one of those arguable (frick it, Bama would have claimed it.)
1969 as well, again with the Rebels - the ball bouncing one way or another - if we win out in 1969, that's very likely a championship year.
1987 was a little more of a stretch - another tie and we really didn't take care of business against Bama - but that team had championship potential. Likewise, the 1996 team was overmatched in 2 of the 3 big games that year, but more consistent play from that group of players - one could see we were just a piece or two away from being contenders.
So, the real dim period was from around 1973 (Mac's last great team) and Arns. Yes, Hallman was a big step back, but both Archer and Dinardo fielded teams that, with a little bit of analysis, showed LSU was clearly a championship potential school. And that was with an administration committed to running the football program on the cheap. It wasn't until Dinardo and Saban insisted on money being spent (because that was required to win) that part of the culture changed at all.

Well my early fandom spanned the Archer, Hallman, Dinardo years so that’s what I was used to. It wasn’t until 2000 when we went to the Sugar Bowl that I got a real taste of the excitement of success.

I saw every team from 1965 to the present. I think it is a stretch to call Coach Mac "A World Class Coach". He was more of a 3 yards and a cloud of dust type. LSU had its share of upsets under him but was notorious for losing big games. Cholly Mac would shake in his cleats when we played Alabama.
Bill Arnparger showed more of what LSU could be than Archer or Dinardo. If only LSU would have had the sense to hire Spurrier, Shanahan, or Rutigliano (Who all wanted the job) instead of Archer.

Uh, Coach Mac was a defensive coach.

How many overall games did Alabama lose in the 25 seasons spanning 1958 - 1982? (A: 46) How many conference games over that stretch? (A: 27)

Charlie Mac couldn’t win the big games, especially Alabama. Then came Arnsparger who started rebuilding the program and left. Arnsparger made LSU into a modern program.

Oh YES, Roll Tide went flat when Bryant left for quite a while.

I can recall LSU playing a bowl game against Wyoming!? Have no clue the year but it was a televised game and it made me proud & sit up and take notice. Had to be late 60s?

My grandfather gave me a Chinese bandits t shirt I found in his attic when I was a kid. I dreamed about LSU winning a National Championship. I talked about LSU a lot with him and he took me to my first games.
He was originally from Massachusetts and grew up a Red Sox fan. Came down to Louisiana when he was in the Air Force and met my grandmother and never left. Attended LSU and was an alum.
He once told me in the 90s that he was not going to die until the Red Sox won a world series and LSU won a football national championship. He died of skin cancer in May 2005 less than 2 years after LSU won a national championship and the Red Sox won the world series.

I'll never forget watching it with my dad. I was 13 and still remember him repeating while that last punt was in the air "LSU won the national championship. I can't believe it"

I grew up in the same era. Started going to games mid 60s with the whole family. Heard all about that season. Even knew a couple of the players on the that team. Remember the youth tickets cost something like $3.50 each game up until the early 80s.
