I know red shirted players are allowed to play, but isnt there a certain amount of plays or play time that will have the red shirt removed? Does anybody know the exact number? Or if thats even right?

My understanding is 1 play now. The rules have changed.

Players used to be able to play minimally in the first few games and still keep their redshirt.
Now, if they step on the field for a play their redshirt is gone.
I don't know how I feel about the rule change, but I can understand where the NCAA was coming from.

If you play 1 play you cannot redhirt.
But, you can play several plays and still qualify for a medical redshirt if you get hurt.

im sure the confusion deals with medical redshirts esp b/c people are using them more and more these days
dont quote me on this, but i believe you can apply(and receive) a medical redshirt if you have a seaosn ending injury, with a "doctor's note" and played in less than 20% or so of the season-- something to that effect

That was never a rule. It was always one play and you can't get a regular redshirt.
Medical redshirts have always been the redshirt that is available if you play a limited amount of time during a season. LSU and other teams used to use them as often as regular redshirts for freshman, only the medical redshirts allowed the freshmen to play in one or two games
Since teams like LSU don't seem to use medical redshirts on minor sprains and bruises on freshmen anymore, people assume that the NCAA has gotten tougher on this. No one knows for sure though.

Jefferson's red shirt has already been burned on 2 or 3 plays in the N. Texas game.

As a compliance guy, I can try to give a brief explanation. As stated above, one play and regular redshirt is gone! For a medical redshirt, you now need to have 1) competed in no more than 30% of games or 3 games--whichever is greater (used to be 20%), AND 2) have a season ending injury/illness, AND 3)can't compete in the second half of the season.
Not sure, but I think the NCAA has cracked down on "minor injury" stuff as a med. redshirt -- now needs to be season ending.

I thought you could keep your red shirt if you competed in less than 10% of the competitions that team competed in or something like that.
