Assuming it's someone who won't be in the playoffs. Or do we have to wait til January?

I'm pretty sure you'll know when it happens.

I remember Pelini being announced as the Nebraska HC prior to the BSCCG. Earliest I can recall.

...Ed Orgeron was announced on Nov. 26th. That was before the SEC CG. Sure it was the end of LSU's season, but Yes new hires get announced before January

Alot of hires are made between the end of the regular season and the bowl games / playoffs.

Ed was announced before the 2016 season ended (it was on the final Saturday of the regular season).

Many are announced before a team's bowl game. Sometimes the HC stays and coaches the bowl for his "old" team. Sometimes he starts his new job.

I can't ever remember a new hire being announced in Oct or early Nov though.

If LSU wants to hire a HC participating in the CFP then we will have to wait until January. If it is an assistant on one of those staffs it will likely be announced before the playoff games.

Hell didn't Sark get hired by UT the day after their CFP game last year & then still coached Bama's offense in the NC?

After the regular season and conference championships, but before the bowls.

During the regular season? Rarely maybe the last few weeks. Generally bad form to blow up a guys spot with his current employer.

Before the bowl game? All the time

I think Locksley was named the Maryland HC during the season.

Here's a fun fact on Brian Kelly before Notre Dame.

2006 season he was the HC at CMU.
On Nov. 27th, Mark Dantonio (HC at Cincinatti) was hired by Michigan St.
On Dec. 3rd, Brian Kelly was named Cincinatti's new HC & they asked him to coach the bowl game.

quote:

Cincinnati elected not to appoint an interim coach and asked Kelly to assume his duties immediately by coaching the Bearcats in their bowl game. Central Michigan was also preparing for a bowl appearance, so while Kelly was in Cincinnati preparing the Bearcats, much of his staff remained at Central Michigan to coach the Chippewas. Following Central Michigan's 31–14 win in the Motor City Bowl on December 26, most of his staff joined him in Cincinnati, where they went on to coach Cincinnati to a 27–24 victory over Western Michigan University in that year's International Bowl on January 6.
