tl;dw - a handful of little fish that look like a combination of piranhas and rollie pollies clean the alligator to the bones over time

As any of us who have seen the whale carcass scene in Blue Planet:the Deep, could have already told you.

They are sea lice. And indeed the same family as Roly Polys. IIRC lampreys and some sorts of worms do work on the bones once the flesh is gone.

Were they expecting something else? shite dies and falls to the bottom and is consumed and devoured by the denizens of the deep.

Aside from ships, all things meet the same fate
