Is James Hetfield the greatest rhythm guitar player in metal? Or even all time?

Its gospel that he is like a metronome. Lars only has his guitar and vocals he plays to. Obviously he is the glue of Metallica. King of the downstroke for sure. Whos better? I think his solos are extremely underrated

I woulda voted Scott Ian.

And Alex Skolnick for lead.

For what he has done, in the band he did it in and over the time he did it..yeah.

A lot of people think Dime was a great lead player, but I think he was a better rhythm.

Dime and Vinnie are sorely missed!

Malcolm Young, RIP. There are isolated AC/DC tracks of just Malcolms guitar on YouTube, Listening to them makes it apparent that his playing was way more than half of the AC/DC sound

Probably yes and yes. Only Mustaine is in the same ballpark - and frankly, the best Megadeth rhythms are the overall best. He's essentially playing lead back there.

I think he's clearly the better soloist of the two in the band.

I think even as much of a bitter shitstain of a human being as he is he would admit Hetfield is the best rhythm guitar player in metal.

Dave Murray and Adrian Smith switching back and forth from lead to rhythm is pretty amazing. They are so talented…

All time? No, James wouldn’t know where to begin with a chicken picking rhythm

Nah, he ain't so bad. And he might. But he has many utterly sick rhythm lines. I would offer Addicted to Chaos, and Mastermind as fine examples.

Joe Duplainter -Gojira ...Hetfield would be a student in his class

Dave Mustaine is also better than Hetfield by a mile

Lead is --- Ulrich Roth -Scorpions
