Seems like it should be higher

It easily could be higher, but the chief engineer on the TFL video of the launch clearly said ride comfort and quality were top considerations for the truck. They put rear coil over suspension to make the ride better. They could have gone back with leaf springs, increased payload, and made ride quality suffer. But that was not there goal.

Its funny people don't think Toyota has researched the market. They have and they found a lot of new truck buyers are coming from Luxury Suv's. They also know most people don't max out payload. They also know your average guy tows about 8000 pounds max and is more of a weekend warrior type then an everyday tower.

So they set out to build a truck that rides like a luxury vehicle and has extra towing capacity for the average guy, but they weren't trying to be class leaders in towing or payload.

We will see if they hit what the market wants or not.

This. I’m switching from a car to a hybrid tundra next year most likely. I have no need for a truck with my job and may hitch a trailer to it once a year or so. I’m only buying one because I really just want something I can throw shite in the back of when needed. I hate having to ask a buddy to borrow their truck when I need one so I’m just getting my own.

100pct this. I think its dumb to compare max payload or trailer towing. (a) nobody maxes it out; (b) most folks drive 1500 or mid-size trucks. If you want something that can tow like an ox, get a 2500/3500 and not only are the nominal weights much higher, but the truck is set up for said work as a primary task. If you tow regularly or near capacity in a 1500, you're doing it wrong.
