How can anyone not like the LOTR trilogy?
I can watch them now and love them - every scene/line seems like an old friend coming home.
However...I DO think things like Game of Thrones have blasted them a little bit into the stone age. The characters are all basically 2 dimensional simply because everything is pure, black and white, good vs evil.
I don't actually like GoT better, but in many ways, it is more interesting, as you get to see real people in real political settings trying to strike the balance between self interest and good.
So, I could see someone objecting along those lines, especially if they saw more recent stuff first.

The Men (Denethor in particular) are more gray at times in the books, but there is no gray areas regarding Sauron, the Orcs, the Trolls, Nazgul etc.
They are pure evil.
