Lucas didn't put any explanation behind the Ewoks. As fans we can't just add to the story so it fits right in our brain. The original script was planned to be Wookies but Lucas changed it to be these primitive teddy bears for the main reason of selling toys. That motive in itself limits the film from being taken seriously.
