Why would the coaches put out the "took the wrong class" narrative if that were the case? Especially now since Ed is on thin ice. Makes them look even worse.

Do we even know that it’s the coaches who put that narrative out there? Serious question, as I’m not sure exactly where this stuff originated.

Sometimes people like to cover up the truth with another truth or a half-truth.
He very well could have taken a course that is not relevant to his major, aka "the wrong class", to bring up his GPA. However, he could've also failed/got caught cheating/whatever in the course that he needed to pass in order to stay eligible.
