Tipping based on bill amount is ridiculous imo. Even at a nice dinner how much time does the waiter actually spend on your table? In many cases I would bet that they are making more per hour based in that tip than the person paying the bill. $100 tab did the waiter really do $15-20 of work? No imo

So, how much would you typically pay in tip on a $100 bill?

This is a terrible take.
Servers at high end restaurants are trained to know nearly every ingredient in the food when asked. They go through weeks of training on the wine list, studying the vintage, flavor profile, etc. They not only memorize nightly specials, but have participated in tasting and can offer legitimate descriptions that aren't written by someone else for them to recite. They box your food for you, away from the table, and bag it up nicely. They swap out your utensils as you move through courses, and they even scrape your crumbs off the tablecloth as they continue to serve you.
If those things don't matter to you, great for you. But to act like they aren't doing any work deserving of a 20% tip on the total bill is frankly a lie.

... So? So because the server might be making more money than you due to the standard 20% tip that people leave, it makes sense to stick it to them by not tipping well and letting other patrons cover for you?
