In defense of Max, he played with his hands tied.

A big part of Max’s game is his ability to run. Due to MB being hurt, they tell him not to run. They fear if he gets hurt, they lose games with a true freshman. Well, you losing games anyway. Let the player be the player he is and use his strengths to help win games.
Second, O’s philosophy, and we have seen it with 3 of four o.c’s now, is protection first. Therefore, you didn’t have rbs in shorter routs like we had with Clyde. He doesn’t have quick outlets for the blitz.
Third, he doesn’t have a run game or an above average line to give him time to make clean throws.
With the above noted, he had a few bad throws, however, for the most part he was accurate, making the right reads, and a hell of a lot better qb than we have had in the past for the exception of 9.
I think he’s getting to much criticism.

Max missed some easy throws. Not just one, but several. His mechanics seem to have fallen back.

Good coaches put their players in postions to be successful, they adjust. UCLA used blitzes and disguises to rattle Max and we didn't adjust. Screen or draw would have been nice..

He was starting for the third time. He made some mistakes but he got no help from the run game. UCLA was blitzing almost every play, Max did well under the circumstances. We have to find a run game and fast.

Agree
But I think this offense was set up for Brennan. Not Max.
The offense definitely did not play to his strength.
However, I think Brennan wins the game. His passing would have opened up the field, Max let the defense just collapse on the middle.

I don’t think it was just mechanics. He was a little late on reads and just does not have the arm strength to compensate for that. I think, as the year goes on, this will fix itself. He’ll start to read faster. Will he reach The Matrix level, like Burrow did? We’ll see. His arm strength will get better as his body matures. His is probably similar to Burrow’s when Burrow was in his second year.

He played well when it was 2, 1, throw or run... when he tried to look for the 3rd option or down the field - this is when things went wrong.
Very solid game especially with no rush attack and limited pass protection, and 3rd start.

I don't blame Max. The coaches couldn't figure out how to counter UCLA's blitzes.

I'm 90% sure that if we had any competent coaches, they would've corrected that at some point. See the last TD to Boutte. He stepped up into his throw and threw a dime. His mechanics were wildly off because he was scared, backing up, and throwing off his back foot.

Fact. On most of his missed throws, he was throwing WAY off balance, and it wasn't even necessary.
Neither LSU's offense nor defense adapted to UCLA though. UCLA made the correct adjustments.

I think this is probably true, but then it begs the question- why was Max bailing from the pocket so early if he's not "allowed" to run? Multiple times he abandoned a decent pocket too quickly to roll out and cut his receiving options in half.

I agree that he's generally accurate. I disagree that he makes the "right reads". He generally doesn't put the ball in harm's way, but he doesn't go through his progressions fully imo. If the first or maybe second option isn't open quickly, he looks to bail out of the pocket. It's been that way since he took over against Florida.

Playcalling hurt Max. Yes, he didn’t make crucial throws…not defending that. But when a team is blitzing 70% of the time…you have to counter. There were no screens, no RPO, nothing.

Early in the game the play calling hurt Max, but he cannot consistently make downfield throws. He's way too slow reacting to set up plays downfield.

Max is not a runner.
He's a game manager first, a passer second. He's asked to do RPO's and to do that effectively one must threaten to run. He threatens.

If you think Brennan would’ve made it in this pressure you’re dead wrong. No matter who was back there they were going to get their arse whipped.
Our coaches set max or who ever lined up back there for failure. Zero adjustments. Zero effective play calling

The pass protection and the running game was abysmal. He had absolutely no help. Max was among the least of the problems on offense.

No, you need a QB that can open up the field, Max is not that QB.
I don't think he was the primary problem but I know Myles would have made many of those throws Max couldn't.
