The Texas-California showdown Friday between No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) vs. No. 13 Duncanville (Texas) headlines a packed weekend of high school football. The game features over 40 players who have landed at least one FBS offer and is the first time a nationally ranked team from California travels to Texas since 2015 when Euless Trinity (Texas) upset No. 1 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.).

Legit matchup. Mater Dei is ranked #1, pipeline to USC.

California vs. Texas in two Top 10 Nationally ranked teams.

Texas teams are 20-13 against California teams since 2000.

In 2015, Concord De La Salle went to Euless Trinity as the No. 1 team in the nation and lost 26-21. Coach Justin Alumbaugh said the experience exceeded expectations. He said his wife required 30 minutes just to get through a massive tailgate party before the game.

“It’s really 'Friday Night Lights,'” he said. “The pageantry, the setup, the support, the barbecue joints. Then you go to the game. They have massive, gorgeous stadiums. It was electric. Their bands, their student sections. It was just bigger. There was more people doing more of it enthusiastically. They take it a little serious.”

That blows. Like boxing. Hype the game and then make everything a pay site.

bullshite... Trinity was in the same school district I attended and we played in the same stadium... while they are more popular than my high school was, they do not have massive tailgates. They have a large polynesian population(which is why they are good every year since they always have a massive offensive line) which likes to celebrate with tongan barbeques and such but its not that impressive from a size standpoint.

Our stadiums are definitely bigger than California. The stadium Trinity/my high school played in was the largest in the state at the time it opened in 1987, seats 12,500. Local newspapers wondered if such a large stadium was necessary, now its old and outdated and outdone by many other stadiums in the area.

The University Interscholastic League (which handles all public school sports) has long had a rule prohibiting live broadcasts of Friday night games. (Oddly, the rule doesn't prohibit broadcasts of Thursday or Saturday night games. DeSoto and Cedar Hill -- two powerhouse teams from adjacent districts -- were on a few years back because it was a Thursday game.)

Wish I could’ve gone to this game.

D’ville plays some nasty defense, they’re a bit old school compared to the trend in Texas.

Well that sucks…A local L.A. Times reporter is at the game so I’ll be following his Twitter updates.

Definitely not as wild as when Trinity plays Bell, the only game each year Pennington Field actually fills to capacity

he has incredible athleticism but theres a reason that some schools, like OU, kinda backed off after seeing his junior film. he has a weird motor and he kinda relies on his athleticism just dominating and when it doesnt, he disappears

So basically if you touch the field for one of these schools, you are good enough to play in college. That’s wild.
