It because the greats don’t usually need the money, and the hours required to be a coach at the elite level are very demanding. When a player has retired and put the time in, he wants to enjoy his free time, family, and money.

Arguably the second greatest all purpose back at LSU did - Jerry Stovall. Turns out he was a much better player than coach.

Harbaugh is coaching, but may not qualify as a superstar. Although I'm sure he enough career earnings that he doesn't need the money.
