Why are people obsessed with redshirting everyone?

If a freshman is good enough to play, let him play. Simple as that. Also, if they are good enough to play as freshman, they shouldn't stay here for five years anyway.

If a freshman is good enough to play he does; or if he feels a need in a particular year. Otherwise, he redshirts.

Because people are dumb. "RS JJ!!!! RS JJ!!!! Ahhhhh the world is over if he burns his RS!!!!"

because players benefit greatly by having a free year to learn the system, get bigger and stronger, and mature before being thrown in the fire.
This obviously doesn't reflect all players (Laron Landry, Michael Clayton, Patrick Peterson, etc.), but it is a good representation of most players you sign. Most aren't ready to play as true freshman. So, them having an extra year can be crucial.

Redshirting definitely isn't what it once was since no "great" player stands a chance of hanging around for 5 years. They'll get inticed by the NFL after their soph or junior year anyway.

Our program hasn't recovered from not having Travis Daniels in 2005.

I agree. Most players that play as true freshman won't be around for 4 years anyway. Now what happened a few years back kinda sucked. Can't remember the D-back's name to save my life, but due to an injury Saban had to put him in for 1 or 2 plays at the very of the Peach Bowl vs GaTech. He didn't play all year and lost his redshirt on the last play or two of the last game.

I don't think people are upset that Jeff played, but that he only played 3 garbage time plays against the worst team we'll face all year. He gained NO experience from those 3 plays that'll help him in the future. Do you think he's now ready to play @AU or @UF? If he was really needed to play in games and be a part of the gameplan, he should've played more in the first 2 games.

it builds comtinuity in the program when you have guys that have been there for a long time. Not everyone should red-shirt. Like you said, if a guy is good enough to play as a freshman then play him. I dont see a point in burning a red shirt for a guy just to play on special teams, but I can see if a guy is going to be a meaningful contributor then don't hold him back when he can help out now.

I'm pretty sure that our first and second string quarterback need all the work they can get.

We may just need JJ before this season is over. He is talented enough to compete for the QB spot and he needs to get some reps too. The last thing we want is to put him in a game for the first time in front of a hostile Auburn or Florida crowd. We dont need to redshirt everyone. There are plenty of players that have contributed greatly their true freshman year. We have 2 young Qbs this year we will have 2 young Qbs next year and will sign more the following year.
My point is that sometimes redshirting a player isnt the best thing for the player or the team and other times it is. So who cares if he lost his RS, the COACHES dont seem to concerned about it do they, so why should you.

I get where you are coming from but look at it this way. Its ideal that you dont want to use starters to chase down punts and kickoffs just to come back on the field to defend. If a young player is capable of making an impact on special teams then let them. People underestimate special teams and their impact on the game. We arent the only team that does this, in fact every team in the country puts young players on special teams.

Which is fine. But then don't play Jeff. Playing him for 3 plays against UNT accomplished nothing in getting him ready to play in other games during the season.
I want him to play, I think he'll be awesome. But with our SEC schedule coming up, I think he should've played more in the first two games, or not at all.

Doesn't matter. It was NEVER in Miles' plans to redshirt him. He said before the season that he was NOT redshirting him.

I disagree. The next time he takes a snap he probably won't feel like he's about to throw up whatever he ate earlier that day and his head won't be spinning so bad that he lines up behind the left tackle to receive the snap. And maybe he won't throw the ball at the receiver's feet. I'm exaggerating, but you get my point.

I don't think it was ever in Miles' plan to have him ready for these games. I think he is the 3rd string QB and just in case one of the other QBs goes down, he doesn't want his 2nd string to have never even taken a snap.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to think of Les. Maybe that's the way he wants it.
On the one hand, he seems adamant about JJ playing this year, so he might as well get him started.
On the other hand, I see us playing a lot of games pretty close; therefore, he will not take another snap until the next blowout. Who knows when that will be. Miles never will put him in a tight game. I thought he used Perrilloux too conservatively last year in tight games.

Jefferson will get some snaps against AU! We will be up by 21 late in the game :koolaid:

JJ will play in the majority of the remaining games. LSU will win several of those comfortably and JJ will see some decent time...does everyone on this site think that the staff is completely senile or what?

If he doesnt play again all year then Ill understand your argument. But its only the second game and obviously the kid wasnt ready to take more snaps early in the season. Though that would have been more ideal. When the kid is ready it seems that Miles plans on using him.

I would understand your point if he played earlier in the game. But again, 3 plays at the end of a blowout when probably only 15000 fans remain isn't great experience. It's not experience at all.

See last year when we pretty much only played Flynn and RP. Do you honestly think Hatch got any appreciable experience playing whatever handful of plays?
Again, I'm not knocking the decision to play Jeff. I'm knocking the face that we didn't play him earlier (and more.)
