If you run a vehicle with a miss for a while, it will eventually ruin your catalytic converter. You’re basically dumping raw gasoline from the missing cylinder into the cat. It literally melts the shite inside the converter and clogs it.

Go to autozone and they will pull the codes for free. It could as simple as a bad O2 sensor causing a coil not to fire or a bad coil pack. Both are an easy fix.

CEL is blinking due to engine actively misfiring. The misfire is most likely a bad coil . Pull each coil individually and inspect the end that plugs onto spark plug It is basically a hollow tube with a coil mounted on top. The "wire" goes through the hollow tube. Check the outside of tube at the end for a burn spot. If it has a burn spot it is firing to the inside of the galley housing instead of spark plug;hence, misfire. If you see no burn spot then run at idle and pull each coil pack up individually until you find one that doesn't affect the idle speed when you pull it up-that's your misfiring cylinder. Coil must be plugged in when you pull if up from spark plug. I would only replace the coil at fault as that engine has no history of total replacement being a necessity.
Damage can definitely be caused to a Cat while the engine is running. A misfire is detrimental to a Converter and is one of the primary culprits in converter demise. The idea that a converter can't be damaged by running the engine is ludicrous.

What? This is the reason the Check Engine light is designed to flash when you have an ignition issue/misfire. If you continue to drive it, it will dump fuel and harm the converter. Pretty much the main reason for the “flashing” of the check engine light.
Get it scanned. Probably an ignition coil. Pretty common.

I much appreciate the helpful replies. I didn't want to drive the car any more than absolutely necessary so I have decided based on my guesses and the information from you men and ladies of the O-T presented me with, to go ahead and purchase 4 new plugs and coil packs from Toyota tomorrow and install them here. I'm confident now that this will solve the problem. I assume it's probably smartest to purchase genuine OEM Toyota parts, especially for the coil packs. I guess I'll go ahead and get the plugs there too while I'm at it. Again thanks for the help.

I never get too wrapped up with buying OE parts. The OE almost never actually manufacturers the parts and buys from a supplier. You can probably find out who makes them online and buy that brand and save money. And I’m not saying to buy Chinese garbage, just don’t get to worked up about buying Toyota parts because Toyota doesn’t make them to begin with.
ETA looks like Denso makes Toyota’s coils. Just FYI in case you want to shop it.

Thank you billjamin. I will definitely compare prices and look into who makes them. Appreciate the info brother.

When you fire the parts cannon you go big
Could be a loose gas cap, mass air flow sensor, o2 sensor, bad fuel injector..........
You can buy a cheap code reader for less than the cost of 1 OEM Toyota coil pack

Take it have the codes pulled

This is still the best idea for now. It might tell you which cylinder or bank is misfiring depending on how that car is configured.
