Today late afternoon I discovered a busted pipe between the meter and the house, but close to the house. Called a plumber who charged me $450. Took about 2 hrs to fix. Did I get hosed? Just curious so I know better next go around.

You should have let your wife/gf handle the negotiations.

Yes. Should have bought a T handle for these situations and cut off the main.

Plumbers charge ridiculous rates baw. Sounds inline with what you can expect from one. If you have to use one, you will get fricked on price.

There's an old saying about that. "Why are plumbers so expensive? Because they're damn well worth it."

Let's see. I had 4 toilets rebuilt, hot water heater lines fixed and four hours time spent.
$1300.00
I'd say you got off real easy.
This guy was $150/hr. I know the local area well because of work I do. Usually they about $100 a hour. They came out same day here, mumbled some crap about Covid. But then they always come with a helper. They charge for that too.
Plumbing is a racket and they charge out the butt.

Ha! He came at the end of the day so I was not going to turn him down and needed it fixed as my lawn became a mud hole.

Probably true. I got fed up and learned how to fix pretty much every basic plumbing problem. Saved tens of thousands that way.
I’d definitely still call one if fixing some shite in my attic though.

Was his name Zeke the Plumber?

I probably could have fumbled around with the toilets to replace the parts myself but I didnt have time for all that.
The crap is now all working right as rain.
I kind of just let the rube root around finding crap and he he fixed some things I didn't know about.
Do I think I got ripped off? Yeah, probably. Did I get same day service and were they reliable? Yes.
You get what you pay for I guess. Like anything else.

You paid 450 for someone to replace a short section of 1” pvc. If you didn’t know where the leak was, every dollar WELL spent.
If you did, you cost yourself about $440 and some dirt on your clothes. And a good chunk of manhood.

Sounds like you got a real plumber, I would done it myself if it was easy dig and I’m 64.
But now you paid for somebody that guaranteed their work . Me being a cheapskate, plus I am broke, means I probably would have done it and messed something up, lol l
You know I’m a jack of all trades and half-arse of none ! At least you have 400 plus to fix !

then why didn't you fix it yourself?
don't get mad at the plumber for taking care of your house and charging you for it.

Yeah. The price might be high. But that leak if left unchecked could cost you in the thousands.
