OK, this goes way back to a lecture I heard from a college athletic director in the 1980s. A new study had just come out about sports injury and psychology.
They found that top level athletes in track and gymnastics (male and female) had a MUCH higher incidence of minor injury just before their biggest meet as opposed to all the rest of their season of competition. And it was a dramatic difference.

Psychologists concluded that it is subconscious avoidance of competing for the big one and losing, thus causing disappointment from coaches, family and fans. Instead you get sympathy.
