The poster asked me what gives out first on a failed dead lift and I guess for me, it feels like on my initial ascent up that my quads and lower back feel torqued and that I am not going to fully lock it out all the way up. Yes, I have struggled many times to fully lock out a dead but managed to get it by sheer will, but these days, if I don't feel it, that weight is going back to the floor. Shite, I have been deadlifting since I was in high school and I am pushing 50 so I kinda know when I am gonna get a successful dead for the most part.

Why not alternate the mixed grip during working sets?
I’ll use double OH on stuff that is 225 and below but start going to mixed grip once I start with higher volume sets at 275.

I've always pulled mixed grip for anything above 225 as well, but I don't alternate my hands.
If you're working other body parts regularly there should be no reason an imbalance would ever be created. At least not enough to have a noticeable difference.

I can’t see what you’re doing, so I’m basing my next statement based entirely on this. It sounds like you are not engaging your hips. When the bar is just past your knees, squeeze your arse forward like your on a date with Scarlett Johanson and you just ate Mexican food. The two biggest problems when it comes to deadlifting is not locking the posterior chain or not using the hips.

He's been lifting for 20+ years and can pull more than 600 lbs. I'm sure he values some random internet poster's who's never seen him advice.

Could pull that is the correct answer now. I actually set that weight as a target in 2017 since I was also still competing in BJJ tournaments. At that time I was a Purple Belt and I needed to get under 205 to make weight for a competition so I figured it would be cool to get to 200 pounds and try to get a 600# dead since that would be 3X my body weight. It was a struggle because I typically walk around at 220 but will get down to 210ish right before a tournament and just do a cut right before to make weight then rehydrate and carb load right after. I was a little gassed when I made the pull from the weight cut but I did it. Actually had a buddy video the lift.
I still will creep over 500 if I am feeling up for it these days. I pulled a 545 for 2 about a month ago.

I love it when I roll with some guys that are about the same skill level as me. Plus, the self defense part is a big component as well. Rolling with 20 something White Belts that go balls out trying to tap you, well I don't really like that. Frick, all of my injuries have not come from lifting but from doing jits and it is kinda funny this thread is about grip strength because that is a huge factor in BJJ.

I would have never have guessed that. Maybe one day I’ll give it a shot. We have a repuatble BJJ school in Baton Rouge, but their cost is outside of my budget.
