With her contract set to expire amid a tumultuous NBA Finals for ESPN, Maria Taylor reportedly has a roughly $3 million salary offer on the table to remain at the network.
She also has other suitors.
The New York Post's Andrew Marchand reported on Thursday that ESPN has offered the 34-year-old reporter and TV host a roughly $2 million raise over her current yearly salary of $1 million.
The report arrives as the network deals with the fallout from reporter and host Rachel Nichols' 2020 comments suggesting that Taylor, who is Black, was awarded her job as "NBA Countdown" host during the NBA Finals because of a diversity effort rather than her merits.
Nichols, who is white, had shared hosting duties with Taylor during the 2019-20 regular season and expected to host the show during the Finals.
Will Maria Taylor consider staying at ESPN amid fallout?
Nichols made the comments not realizing she was being recorded while in the NBA bubble in June 2020. Taylor has reportedly refused to work directly with Nichols since her comments were leaked internally at ESPN. Her comments went public on Sunday in a New York Times report, more than a year after they were made and two days before Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Nichols was replaced as the network's sideline reporter for the NBA Finals by Malika Andrews after the Times report. According to the Times, ESPN didn't initially discipline Nichols for her comments but did suspend a Black woman producer who shared the recording internally, fueling speculation that Taylor is unhappy with ESPN's treatment of Black employees. Taylor has not addressed the issue publicly outside of a Wednesday tweet referencing "dark times."
Taylor's contract ends before potential Game 7
Taylor's contract will expire on July 20, the same day Game 6 of the NBA Finals will be played, if needed. The uncertainty of Taylor's contract status looms large over the network's coverage.
Will she be satisfied with ESPN's reported $3 million offer? Will she be comfortable working for the network after the Nichols fallout?
According to Marchand, she has options. NBC and Amazon are both interested in hiring Taylor, according to the report. Taylor has a strong background covering football and could presumably join NBC's NFL and college football coverage or Amazon's team covering the NFL with its upcoming Thursday Night Football package.
What Amazon and NBC are willing to offer Taylor was not reported.

Must be nice to get a monster contract offered to you just because you’re black. She’s not even a good reporter...

i thought espn offered her 5 mill a year, but she turned that down for steven a. smith money, 8 mill a year?

3 mill for any reporter is crazy to me.

Again they say Black but then say white.

Paying any sideline reporter that much is a waste of money.

Yahoo gonna Yahoo
Cliff Booth, who is white, thinks the article written by Jason Owens, who is white, about Maria Taylor, who is black, is crap.

I saw a report that her contract ends mid Finals, that would be wild if they can’t negotiate

I didn't know Amazon had also gotten into the college football broadcasting market. Is this streamimg, probably I would guess. Also, Maria Taylor has gotten most of her experience at ESPN, and she hasn't been at ESPN very long, I think. Just a waste of money when you can promote one of the younger reporters there like the girl they have doing the NBA finals now to do her job. These networks would save a lot of money by just hiring and training young pretty faces all the time to replace the ones that are starting to be a problem like Taylor with asking for too much money.

If she walks I wonder who replaces her on College GameDay.
My hope would be Laura Rutledge.

I'd let them lock me in Mike Leach's storeroom for a year for $3 million.

I truly don’t understand this. Does Maria Taylor being on ESPN or not on ESPN make one difference in ratings?
They could hire 30 writers at $100,000 to produce actual content for ESPN+ For that salary. This really is just emblematic of what is happening at every company. People at the top are sucking up all the resources and the middle is gutted or gone.

All reporters are human garbage, so the fact that any of them are getting multi million dollar contracts is ridiculous. They are all easily replaceable and don't deserve to breathe the same air as decent people.

How much does Adam Schefter get paid?
He's the only real reporter at that network.

Serious question?
Would any one know or care if we didn't have sideline reporters or courtside reporters? And to think the make millions? what a fricking racket. Never once have I tuned into a game of interest to hear what these people have to say.
Most of the time they ask a pissed off coach running to be with his team why he threw on third and short with 10;00 to go in the second quarter or why Billy Bob (the QB) doesn't seem himself today?
