New movie on HBO Max starring Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, Brendan Frasier, Matt Damon, Kieran Culkin, David Harbour, Ray Liotta, John Hamm, Julia Fox. Steven Soderbergh movie.

I thought that it was enjoyable. It's a noir-esque movie that takes place in 50s Detroit. It has pretty unique plot. It bored me at times, but the acting, and sets are good, and it has some funny humor. Definitely worth a watch.

Forgot to add, they shot the movie with what seemed like a weird fisheye effect. I assume that it was meant for a curved screen, and/or big screen, and I don't have a curved screen. It was kind of neat, but a little distracting, and disorienting.

You hit the nail on the head, would have summed it up the same way.

Feels important to note this is a Steven Soderberg movie.

Checks out.

Also, he does mention that in the OP.

The fisheye lens is extremely distracting in the beginning.

How does Del Toro look 1000x’s better than Brendan Fraser? It was kind of sad seeing him bloated up.

Besides del Toro always having looked better than Fraser, Fraser is intentionally getting obese for a roll in Darren Aronofsky's next film, The Whale. Fraser is playing the titular whale.

Soderbergh was recently on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. Maron asked him about the fisheye lens look; Maron thought maybe it was something hinky with his screener version. Soderbergh said it was intentional but didn't really explain what he was trying to achieve with it.

I did learn that Soderbergh went to LSU Lab School. (Wiki says his his father was Dean of Education at LSU.) He said he used to hang after school with the college kids who were into film. I'm probably the last here to learn this.

I hardly even noticed the fish eye lens

He always does some new experiment or type of filming when making a new movie. He’s the same director that shot that movie for Netflix completely on an iPhone. He just likes the craft of it

Isn't he from BR? I finally found Sex, Lies, and a Videotape available on Showtime. I would always read the articles laminated on the table in Zee Zee's where they shot some of the scenes but I could never find the movie anywhere.

This movie is so boring. This is a bottom 10 movie this year for me so far. Such a waste of some good actors, why is Jon Hamm even in this movie? I’m an hour and a half in, and I’m pausing the movie every minute to see that there’s mercifully one less minute to go until it’s over
