Does anybody here have any experience dealing with them? There's something fishy about some of the services I see advertised on TV, but I've heard some positive things about Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Baton Rouge.

They seem okay with me. I know they worked with my family when I was growing up around the late 80's / early 90's. It makes a lot of sense from an economic efficiency standpoint to have third-party professionals bargain with all of your creditors for a reasonable payment plan.

Thanks. I may give one a call; I've tallied up my unsecured debt and the amount I'm paying per month is killing me. The only consolation is that my debt burden is not for luxury items.

This shouldn't be a consolation.

eta: but getting out of debt is a GOOD thing. Kudos for you for starting. Its hard to do but you have a lot more freedom without debt

Perhaps, but I'm not one of those tards who's in over his head with a bay boat, hunting club membership, 4WD truck, big screen t.v, 4-wheeler, etc. The only luxury items I have are cell phone, cable t.v., and LSU season tix.

I had a family member use Consumer Credit Counseling (CCC) and they were very happy with the service. I do not recall them telling me that the service was posted on their credit report. I'm sure CCC or a lawyer can give you that information....good luck!

I dont know about chapter 13 but I have heard its looked at by lenders as a red flag. I think if this is indeed true it needs to be advertised more..

Well, I think it obviously depends on your situation. I doubt they would make your credit situation worse than necessary. The people who end up with red flags probably would have gone through a regular bankruptcy if they didn't get help. I mean, it's not like you should automatically get a clean credit report just because you turned to CCCS, even though you've been defaulting for months and about to lose your house.

Also, they're a non-profit, right? I can't remember.

I highly advise against it. You can do the same thing they do, and save yourself the high fees that charge on top of the interest you are already paying. Plus, the vast majority of these are scams, and you pay them money that never makes it to the credit card companies. By the time your realize it, you've wasted hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and your credit cards all charge off to debt collection agencies anyway. If you do decide to do it, RESEARCH the hell out of the company before paying them a dime, and be sure they are registered with the BBB.

This exact thing happened to the grandmother of a coworker. However, CCCS is legit. I've checked them out.
