Do you really have to throw the ball 40+ yards?

To beat SEC teams? I've seen the argument posted that Jarrett Lee throws the ball harder and further so he needs to "take his lumps" and just start/play the whole time without concern for how many games it will cost us this year while focusing on next year. The other argument is that Hatch may not throw as hard so he may not cost us as many games but may hinder our future because he may not get any better than he is now due to arm strength. What do you guys think? JL or AH as full time starter, or should we go with the "hot hand" each game {like Spurrier does}. So in summary...Do you really need to throw the ball 40+ yards to beat very strong SEC defences.

You need to every once in awhile, keep D honest IMO. But if you cant you better make sure you are very accurate with your short passes and be able to run run run!!

Not necessarily, but it sure does help loosen up the defense if you have that threat. If you've got a receiver that can run a 4.3 and is a deep threat, what difference does it make if you don't have a QB who can deliver? Certainly with the talent LSU has, we don't HAVE to go deep. But if we had that threat, then defenses would have to play their safeties accordingly, instead of cheating up.

Irrelevant ... both of our QBs can get the ball 40 yards down the field.

A strong arm gets the ball to his WR much quicker on sideline routeswhich helps keep INTs down.

45-50 will usually suffice

Yes. You absolutely have to be able to do this. You need to have a strong enough arm to throw it at least 55 yards as a college QB. I think the concerns about Hatch's arm are overblown projecting by LSU fans. But to say that since you don't have a lot of passes go over 40 yards you don't need to be able to do it is silly. If you can't throw 40 yards, you also can't throw a 15 yard out with sufficient speed to not give up a bunch of pick sixes.

If you can't throw a ball 40 yards, you can't even be qb for any college.
That has nothing to do with a 40m yard downfield pass, but as others have stated, has more to do with the sideline passes which you need to be able to get to the wr with velocity.
Any qb and most decent athletes can throw a rainbow pass for 40 yards. But to be able to get a quick sideline pass to a receiver is where the qb are seperated in high school to college and in college to pro.
I also think the talk about Hatch's weak arm is overblown.

There should be a rule that you can't post on this board unless you can spell the players names correctly. ridiculous.

Players' names. Rediculous should be capitalized.
And there should be a rule that you can't correct someone's grammar unless you can type two sentences without fricking them both up.

Fo sho. But I don't go around correcting everyone for grammar. It's a message board, not an English quiz. I do what you just did, blast a guy for correcting someone, when he doesn't even get it right. And yeah, I accept your blast on me. I deserve it. And I won't go back and edit my post either. It should teach me my own lesson to let the shite go. Good catch.

So do you guys think we should go with the arm strength of JL or ball safety of AH? Or should we go with the "hot hand?" and play both the whole season? I would guess that JL will eventually catch up and take over so that we would get the best of both worlds so to speak.
