Excellent take. Louisiana did make some strides in literacy this session with a pilot program, but it needs funding.

Instead we gave out another teacher pay raise.

If we went back to the McGuffey reader to teach reading, we would be light years ahead of our current “balanced literacy” approach.

A student in Louisiana may be assigned a literacy “coach,” but are under no obligation to prove that they are learning via testing.

In other words, with no skin in the game, the effectiveness is not nearly what it could (and should) be imho.

Mississippi is doing it correctly.

Louisiana is simply being Louisiana.
