Hatch [and now Lee] "Highlights" From App. State

Like many LSU fans, I was so distracted by Gustav and the odd circumstances of the game that I couldn't really focus on Hatch's performance against Appalachian State.
Someone put together his "highlights" on Youtube. I haven't seen it posted here previously:

It was only the first game, but I find the plays in that compilation to be relatively underwhelming. There wasn't a single completed pass where the ball travelled over ten or fifteen yards in the air. The ball doesn't have tremendous velocity, either. Also, Hatch isn't particularly fast, though he has good running instincts.
SEC teams will certainly gameplan to suffocate the short and underneath routes (hooks, bubble screens, inside screens, slants, etc.).
Hopefully we see some more versatility from Hatch this weekend.
DISCLAIMER: No one is saying that Hatch "sucks,' that LSU "sucks," that we are going to finish 3-9, that we are doomed, or any other gibberish. This is just an honest assessment of the plays in the "highlight" package.

Period. The LSU coaches aren't developing Hatch to overwhelm anyone, just so that he will be in a position to win games now and in the future.

I liked it. He threw a few longer than 10 yards down the field. I like the way he ran the ball and knew when to run it. I like how he threw it to the guy who could make a football move for more yards. I think you are trying to flame the guy. More importantly the guy had no turnovers. If you ask me Hatch plays a lot like Matt Flynn.

He may not be that fast, but he made a few people miss in the open field on some of his runs.

I agree. I think MF had a bit more arm, but all the same I think Hatch will turn out alot better then some think.

I'm not so sure about that one. He may, in fact, play like Flynn, but Flynn was vastly more athletic and had a much better arm, IMO.
I don't foresee Hatch ever being a second string QB in the NFL.

The312 - Nice post. If he doesn't get hurt, he starts every game. I like his instincts.

Then again I have not seen him enough...I am going to laugh if he goes out to Auburn and throws a 60 yard strike.

We will see soon enough. He may have had jitter bugs on his first game.

Wow, where were you at NFL draft time when everyone was signing Flynn to practice sqads all over the country?
I think Hatch is capable and very smart. I figure he'll keep the starting job all year if he stays healthy. Only time will tell if Appy State is that weak, or if LSU is that good. I hope it's the latter.

Although granted it was from the perspective of sitting on my couch I liked the personna that Hatch seemed to bring. The young man was confident. I liked the look in his eyes (it was even almost borderline cocky looking). He seems to firmly be comfortable leading the team on the field. Lee looked a little more overwhelmed by the whole first game in TS jitters, imho.

it seems like both of the qb's are pretty accurate. Hatch may not have the strongest arm and Lee may not yet have the pocket presence we would like, but BOTH consistently put the ball in a place that gives our other skill players opportunities to make plays...and that's definitely a huge upside

First game, the coaches were extremely conservative about what they asked the young guys to do in their first significant game action. In the second half the coaches asked them to do a little more but still not much.
Just because a guy doesn't try a long pass doesn't mean he can't make it - just means the coaches didn't call it. It's too bad for the QBs that we didn't get to play Troy - 3 tuneups before Auburn would have been nice for the QBs.
I was happy with Hatch's performance in his first start; way too early to say what he can and can't do.
