The problem is, the law abiding public will basically always be the guinea pigs for your possible alternatives.
I would also question as to whether all these studies are looking at similarly situated criminals. Or might not the ones who are actually being incarcerated be the ones who tend to have a greater general proclivity to recidivism? Chicken or the egg, so to speak.

Speaking of guinea pigs, our little experiment of criminalizing everything under the sun hasn't been very successful. At which point Justice Gorsuch is decrying overcriminalization from the bench, maybe it's time to reassess what we've been doing: Reason.com
