Alarm and cameras are on sale for prime members

You can actually get multiple floodlight cameras cheaper from ring. The prime deal only lets you buy one at the same price. Ring gives you a discount for buying multiple.

Ring needs to upgrade to 4K

Was hoping for doorbell. Had my eye on a ring pro

That would be a metric frickton of data.

It's really hard to find 4K wifi cameras (I believe the 4K Arlo requires their hub, it doesn't connect via wifi), probably because decent looking 4k requires more than what most home wifi can handle reliably. Especially if the cameras are outdoors, wifi speed can drop dramatically. Add to that the random latency spikes inherent to wifi, and it's a recipe for shitty video.
It's even worse if the camera has to record to the cloud rather than a local NVR or memory card, because you are limited by the upload speed and reliability of the internet connection. A really huge chunk of the population doesn't have enough upstream bandwidth to record a single 4K camera at kind of average quality, so it would get compressed to hell and you'd be better off with standard HD.

I think the average person vastly underestimates both how much data 4K requires and how shite their upload speed is

quote:After nearly 3 years with 3 ring doorbells, I have yet to capture a video that could be used to ID a person that I didn't already know. I mean if someone rings the bell and stands there waiting, after 5-10 seconds the video clears up enough to see some detail. But like for delivery drivers, I get zero footage of the 50' walk to the door, and zero footage of them dropping the package. I get fuzzy video of them turning to leave and then the video clears up a bit by the time they are 25' away facing the other direction. Obviously someone could walk up and take a package and I've got nothing on the ring.
Ring sucks arse
So I have a real security camera monitoring the front porch until I can replicate the ring/echo show interface with a better doorbell.

Us to. I have it pointed to the front porch from the garage to catch "faces" when people are walking away. It's very effective.

Have you stood outside next to your camera and run an internet speed test to see what you’re getting in upload speed?

quote:how is its wireless signal? I get decent video, when it decides to record. I get alerts of me walking out the door, and the cats that peruse my front porch at all hours of the night. But the delivery driver that runs in and out with the package...nope. The Cameras are worse. Catches every passing car on the road and bush that shakes the trees, but the car that pulls in my driveway to drop something off, nope. Or the truck that smashed into me while i was stopped in the road, nope. Which lead to the settlement being 50/50 when it was 100% his fault.

What you recommend for a doorbell camera?

Yeah. I don't recall the actual numbers at each of the 3 doors, but my phone is able to upload plenty fast enough when placed right against them.

I can't wait to get that 24/7 recording at the doorbell with no subscription and slick as hell mobile app.

ETA: the 24/7 recording, that is. I still pay a sub fee each year.

Not hijack, but can you just get a ring camera /doorbell item and use it free? I know there is an APP, but do I have to pay for anything? other then the time to wire it up and make it fit?
Posted on 6/23/21 at 8:12 pm to TigerDaddy30
quote:No, I was referring to the UniFi Protect system by Ubiquiti. They have a video doorbell that records to the local NVR installed at your home. That's how you get sub-free 24/7 recording.
