Supply/demand model. Our system of trade is based on the free market system, but regulated by Fedgov. Remove fedgov, and you'd get exponential economic growth. So we have a restrained free market system, that becomes more restrained and bastardized with big government bureaucrats, especially, but not exclusively, liberal Democrats. You throw in leftists, like what is currently in office, and you get socialism/communism.

In theory, and I'd tend to agree with you but there's tons of theories that don't work in practice

I agree except I'd argue Republicans are just as bad. Maybe worse because they lie about it. Democrats are at least open that they're team big government
