One of the stupidest things I ever did in my youth was go on an impromptu kayaking trip with a few buddies down a small unmarked channel right off of a service road in the swamps of LA. We were surrounded by an infestation of gators the entire day and we were getting bumped constantly by the curious bastards. Got back home later and zoomed into the area on Google Maps, turns out us idiots decided to paddle right into a fricking gator reserve.

I’ve had dolphins charge me before when protecting a young one. If you thump the side of your kayak several times hard like a drum, they turn away quickly.
I’m not sure if that works on gators, but had an 8 footer surface about three feet from my kayak and we both got startled and hauled arse.
