A UGA alum and diehard Bulldogs fan, Callaway is now poised to connect with college athletes in a way he couldn’t have fathomed a decade ago: paying them to endorse his products. Onward Reserve will offer contracts to a handful of standout UGA athletes after midnight on July 1 — the date Georgia law says athletes can officially cash in on their name, image and likeness.
“This is a no-brainer,” Callaway told Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Small companies, like Onward Reserve, can now capitalize on the large followings of student athletes. Callaway is expected to sign contracts next month with UGA athletes: track and field star Matthew Boling, quarterback Brock Vandagriff, placekicker Jack Podlesney, golfer Trent Phillips and baseball player Connor Tate.
Onward Reserve is slated to be the first Georgia-based business to sign college athletes to endorsement deals. But, the floodgates may be ready to open. Restaurant owners could partner with the college athlete who love their food. Car dealerships can make a fan-favorite college athlete their spokesperson.

This thread surely won’t be full of LSU and UGA fans arguing over Gilbert or which state is better

Pointing out the type of athlete he chose as the endorsers would probably pivot the thread another way.

Well every state is better than LA.

Lol, so the first athletes to get paid are Matthew, Brock, Jack, Trent, and Connor?
UGA so racist

The University do Georgia can still take a very large portion of all of that money being dished out.

And Kirby has already said they won’t touch it.

So why the placekicker?

Can you please provide further detail on his this works? I am not familiar with the law.

HB 617 allows each school to confiscate up to 75% of all NIL earnings to put into a pool to pay all scholarship athletes equally. And the money can’t be distributed to the athlete until 1 year after they either graduate or exhaust eligibility. At least I think that’s the wording.
IOW, the Georgia Legislature (as is their modus operandi) totally fricked up the NLI law and handed our SEC competition a large club to use against UGA in recruiting. I expect that provision to be repealed next session.

Why are they only paying white athletes?
I jest, but seriously, how long before calls for equal contracts for minorities and females?
As usual, slippery slope.

Can someone explain to me how these NIL "partners" arent going to be anything other than a primitive front for boosters just to syphon money to players out in the open, instead of under the table?

No one can explain it because this is exactly what is going to happen.

In some states the law says it cant be from a booster or affiliate of the athletic department, but obviously there's workarounds.
I guess the question is, why does it even matter? Why try to block adults from going out on their own and getting paid for their own likeness?
LSU Football and football fans are not shy about saying it is like a business that is separate from the University.

So why the placekicker?
Because the state of Georgia is full of dumb politicians. It’s a political thing not a UGA thing.

Not arguing, just curious. How is it political that the kicker is getting paid?
