My advice is to take the most convenient flight. Do not try to take some 5am flight. Sometimes if you are going cross country a midway stopping point is nice to let everyone in the family get a stretch. Be mindful of weather and time or year for any brief layover. Buy a third seat eve if you hold baby entire time.
Bring enough carryon so that you can spend night in hotel if a flight gets delayed or cancelled. Always overpack diapers with a six month old. I spent 21 hours in Houston with a six month old and we had trouble finding diapers to buy after running low. Extra baby clothes always. Somebody will always puke at the most inopportune time.
