At what age are you cool with your kids flying alone?

A buddy and his wife just sent his two boys, one just got out of kindergarten and the other turned 8 last week, off on a plane by themselves across the country to meet his parents.
I know the airlines have plans in place for this, but that seems awfully young. Don't know that I could do that. Am I just too cautious?

8 seems ok considering you can walk them to the gate and have someone on the other end retrieve them

My daughter is 8 and no way I would do that. Maybe 10 or 11

Are they flying the plane themselves?

Just hire a coyote to move them

Domestic airlines are clearly great at everything so I don’t see the problem

I am very old school about letting kids do things on their own and being independent. With that said, airports can be overwhelming. I assume that they are being dropped off at the gate and met directly by another trusted person. If those things are met, I could handle eight...but, it requires work by multiple parties. Obviously, only the most trusted hands.

I'm not a parent, but there are WAY too many pervs in this world to put any kid under 15 on a plane alone.

I started flying by myself around age five once a year to see my grandparents. Wasn’t a big deal at all - the airlines have hostesses that are assigned to a child and stays by their side the whole time. If there’s any layover there are rooms at airports for children filled with games/TVs/snacks and usually free pizza/burgers. It wasn’t uncommon for hostesses to bump my seat up to first-class.
I don’t know how much has changed since the late eighties/early nineties, but traveling alone as a kid was pretty fun.

You should read The Coddling of the American Mind. It explains how the abduction hysteria that started in the 80s was completely overblown and has continued to this day.

I had a 5 year old girl by herself on my flight last night.

I don’t know man. With all the psycho criminals in the world and the problem with human trafficking, I’m not sure I’m sending a 10 year old daughter into an airport by herself.
Maybe 14 or 15 because by then they’re hopefully not stupid enough to...
...well okay I guess when they’re 18 and out of the house they can choose to fly alone.

Mine are 11 and 9 and I’d be fine putting them on a plane alone. My wife is another story

I make mine wear bullet proof vest just to check the mail

You can pay to have the airlines escort them. Works very well, we do this quite a bit.
