Phineas Gage is a famous case studied in neuroscience that effectively was “shot” in the head through the frontal lobe and survived.

If at first you don't succeed, try again.

A gun shot under the chin can avoid critical areas and a patient can survive for weeks.
My sister had a friend in high school who shot himself under the chin. Blew the front of his face off. Police could see from blood trails that after he did it he went into bathroom to look at himself in the mirror. Then he shot himself in his temple.

I still remember when I was a kid and the PA politician R. Bud Dwyer shot himself on live TV. One of the most gruesome things I've ever seen and it still haunts me. The blood literally spurted out like a fountain.
Also had a female classmate who attempted to commit suicide in her 20s or 30s... misfired and blew half her face off, but survived.

Had a neighbor put a 20 gauge shotgun under his chin and pull the trigger. His dad had to bust down the bedroom door to get to him. The dad had to wrestle the shotgun away from him while the son was reloading to finish the job. After many surgeries and therapy sessions he is still alive and healthy as an ox.
