if you're down at half, you get the ball to start the 2nd and hopefully score and change the game

JUST DON'T FUMBLE THE KICKOFF IN GAINSEVILLE EARLY DOUCET

When you defer, it is a very special and explosive decision.

Yes, but very, very slight. The offense sets the tempo more than the defense. By giving more time to your offense in the second half rather than the first, you are able to delay your strategic offensive plans until more information rolls in about how the game is going. But like I said, it's very slight.

If you're reasonably confident in your defense, deferring to the 2nd Half is preferred. The reasoning is that your defense can force a punt and get good field position. If your defense is suspect, you are better off taking the ball to open the game.

Obviously 2nd half adjustments win most games. Offensive mistakes can be corrected by press box coaches in face to face contact with their players and this leads hopefully to some type of score on the initial drive of the 2nd half. This could be the all important "Mo" change if needed.

if your defense is the strength of the team, usually coaches like to start on D and try and "set the tone" for the game. by deferring, you dont lose a possesion b/c if you pick to kickoff, the other team picks first in the second half, and will receive again

Technically, you aren't even deferring the kick off. You are deferring your OPTION to decide to kick or receive. The difference is subtle, but could conceivably matter in horribly inclement weather in which you might decide to kick even in the 2nd half.

Didn't Bradie James screw up one of these on a coin flip once and LSU ended up kicking twice?

I'm not sure if it was him or who it was against, but this did happen in TS.

Yes, it was Bradie that messed this up in 2002.
After, the opposing team deferred, then Bradie said that we wanted defense. The opposing team then took the ball in the 2nd half as well.
Saban removed Bradie's right to talk at the coin toss for the rest of the year.

I can't remember who this was against.

I don't think it was a big game, and to his credit, Saban said it was his own fault.

If you're down you get the first chance to close the gap and do it when you've rested and had a chance to make adjustments at half. If you're up, you get the chance to increase the lead right away and hopefully get your opponent a little more demoralized.

You can also choose which endzone to defend, when you defer the option. This is especially important a Tiger Stadium, and it's why we always defer at home.
