Getting a 3.1 gigabit modem. Do I need to replace my router?

My new internet package is over 1 gb/s. Comcast says I need to replace my modem to a 3.1 to take advantage of the faster speed.
I didn’t think to ask at the time, but would I also need to replace my router to take advantage of the faster speeds?

I have Cox Gigabit with a my own 3.1 Netgear modem but had trouble getting more than 180-200 speed with a Netgear Nighthawk router.
Bought a TP-Link AX6000 router and it jumped up to about 750+ average. Have hit upward of 890 at times.
Just tested, 9:15 pm: 779.5 down and 35.4 up.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been looking at the TP-Link ax3000, coincidentally. Think I might go with that.

I bought the AX6000 because it has 8 LAN ports and allowed me to remove my Ethernet switch thingy.

I am using an Arris sb8200 which is working pretty well along with Google wifi. They tried getting me to use contour2 with cloud DVR and that shite would not work correctly without their shite panoramic modem. Which router are you using OP? It just depends.

Just put in a TP link router with 3.0:modem and I was on the Cox switch over plan. I did nothing and they moved me to 500 down and 10 up plan. That is what the wifi speed test says it is doing. I will check it tomorrow on wired devices when less drunk.

Depends on the speed your router is able to handle. Should just be able to do a quick google of the model and get that answer.

They were going to do the same w my plan, but I wanted to 30 upload so I upgraded the modem.
Just ran a test and getting 302/29 on my cellphone away from the router

Try using one of their modem / routers for a month or two to check out your speeds and reliability. If there are any issues it's their problem to solve.
Once you're satisfied buy one of their approved 3rd party modems: https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices/#unauth

Too late. I got the Motorola mb8611 modem and TP-Link ax3000 router.
Just did a speed test and I’m getting 912 download and 42 upload.

Depends on the model router and the connection cables you're using.
For cabling you'll want Cat6 minimum, as Cat5e caps at 1 Gb/s.
Router just depends, but you'll be looking for the 10 Gb/s models.
