Ultrclassicrock

quote:

Longtime manager Doc McGhee says Kiss found success by focusing on what they did best: “Four chords and bad lyrics.” He also predicts that a speculated live reunion with original guitarist Ace Frehley will take place before the end of Kiss' interrupted farewell tour, and said drummer Peter Criss might be involved too. “My philosophy for all my bands [has] always been if you're the very, very best at what you do, people will come and see you,” McGhee tells Rob’s School of Music. “And if you're not, they will go see the very, very best. fricking simple. So what do we do with Kiss? We do a show that, whether you like Kiss or not – whether you're a Kiss fan or you know one song – you wanna go see this show, because it's an amazing, entertaining show.”

From a guy that loves Rush and YES, a lot of times for me the simpler songs are more fun to play, sing, and just rock out to.

As a bass player, way more fun playing say a Joan Jett or Pat Benetar song than a Rush song. I do enjoy playing a Rush song, but I have to think too much and that can be hard on my caveman brain.

Yes.

And some people can take those simple songs and make more of an impact.

I think Kiss’ songs are more simplistic than Nirvana, both in lyrics and chord choices.

I was a Kiss fan too, but I think even the band members would admit their songs weren’t musically complex

Hey look, bravo to them. They found a way to stand out with the makeup and theatrics and parleyed it into a fortune.

it doesn't always have to be music that the critics in some blog like. Rock can be fun as well.

In fact, its more fun when people drop the pretentiousness associated with being a self professed snob.

Kiss found a formula and made their success, the American way. It appealed to the masses, which means it is not going to be critically acclaimed in most cases.

I was a young man in the 80’s, so I understand about simple music. Early rock and roll was all three chords or less.

Let's Put the X in Sex from the late 80's era KISS might be the worst song ever with the worst lyrics. It's up there with Starship-We Built this City.

I still love 70's KISS though.

This is what I don't get. KISS gets a lot of crap for something every band either did or now does.

- Lots of make-up/gear/gimmick/signature look.
- Simple music with simple lyrics - but damn they're catchy.
- Lots of pyro and lights.
- Lots of merchandise.

Nearly every band that has had any ounce of real success has done either all or at least some of those things.

I mean, for frick's sake these are the lyrics to the Foo Fighters new hit:

quote:

I've been waiting on a war since I was young
Since I was a little boy with a toy gun
Never really wanted to be number one
Just wanted to love everyone
Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this
More to this, more to this than

And Weezer's:

quote:

All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad (hey, hey)
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
I don't know what's wrong with me (ooh, ooh, ooh)
I don't know what's wrong with me (ooh, ooh, ooh)

Not exactly the most groundbreaking and complex compositions.

At 15 years old I was embarrassed to be associated with KISS, but went to a concert and they put on one hell of a show. A KISS concert was more of an event than concert.
