Kiss. Has any band done so much with simplistic songs and bad singing ?
I will get the bad out of the way first - middle years KISS (post-ACE, pre-Hot in the Shade) were pretty bad. I'm not overly sticking up for that.
But they have plenty of kickass tunes that are NOT all just "simplistic":
Hard Luck Woman - first of all, every songwriter in the world would kill to write something this good. Great instrumentation, great bass line, AWESOME melody. This song alone disproves the OP's thesis.
Detroit Rock City - you don't like rock n roll if you can't see the merit in this one. It hits you right between the eyes and has a great story behind it. It's also not "simplistic" - lots of harmonies and arranged parts
Love Gun - AC/DC type juvenile double entendre (I love the way everyone always goes out of their way to suck AC/DC's dick when they a MUCH worse than KISS. I'd say the OP's thread title DOES apply to AC/DC) buried in a killer fricking tune with a great beat.
Black Diamond - sorry, not simplistic.
I Love It Loud - probably the best middle-years tune. Great great arena rock.
Reason to Live - second best middle-years tune
God of Thunder - disastrous production, but a legit scary metal tune. It's fricking great.
Deuce - straight forward rock greatness - and the riff is anything but "simplistic".
100,000 years - another great tune.
She - pure fricking burn. The intro will blast your face off.
I could go on and on, but the OP's meme is dumb. KISS is completely legit musically and you aren't cool for trying to bandwagon hate them.

Gene's scream is legendary in this song

Great post btw.

For me, Destroyer was THE Kiss album. Well produced, good songs with a few studio musicians brought in to help. They used backing vocalist and actually learned to tune their guitars. Musically, every other Kiss album paled in comparison.
As for the simplistic chords and bad lyrics question.....that list would be long.

Longtime fan, legendary concerts back in the day, great bang for the buck, etc...but the last 20 years has been the band mostly hitching their wagons to a 5-year window of their career, the music being a distant second to the visual aspect.
Yes, old age happens to all bands, but in Kiss' case, they used to make it a point to blend their show with hyper onstage energy, and said energy left the building years ago. Nowadays they're planted to the stage, lip syncing the songs, and overcompensating their lack of energy with MORE bombs. Probably not something you'd notice if you're a curiosity-seeking first timer, but if you've seen the band over the years, the drop-off is quite obvious...

Lots of love and respect here. Me thinks this backfired on the OP.

Not a big KISS fan but I respect their musical history and discography. I'm probably more impressed of seeing all the KISS collectibles and merchandise, sounds like a fun hobby to have. That being said, go watch Sebastian Bach's KISS collection on YT, you will be entertained.

Yeah I know, lol... I've seen 'em enough times when they were still mobile onstage, and it's just too cringey to witness now. I last saw them in 2014 with my daughter, and while we enjoyed it, the band was barely functional and Paul was wheezing through his songs. That was 7 years ago, so I can't imagine how lethargic they're gonna be in 2021...

One of my favorite songs, and I love cranking up my amp and playing it on my guitar. Heard the demo version for the first time last week. Paul wrote the song and sang it -it was a lot more bouncy and faster. The producer or whomever decided to give it to Gene and it turned into what we know the song as. Look up the demo version and give it a listen.

Still in my personal all time top 10 albums.

KISS is one of the most influential bands from the 70s.
If you have a favorite artist from the 80s or 90s, they were probably huge KISS fans.
Even MJK says they were he m his favorite band for many years.
They had some really great songs. The album Creatures of the Night is particularly strong.

I liked some of their albums. The first 3 were good.
I liked Destroyer, Crazy Nights, Lick it Up, Animalize and Revenge. After Revenge their stuff declined.

KISS “Alive “ is an underrated album. You can’t believe what these guys went through what it to to make it.... yes...... a little not the best quality but it will capture you....

I actually think KISS are underrated in a lot of ways. Critics are so sure that they're all flash and flare that they never look deep into their catalogue.
It doesn't turn them into huge KISS fans or anything, but any KISS skeptic I've met I've usually been able to find 2-5 deep cuts that they end up enjoying. They would never even believe it was KISS if I didn't tell them.
I also think Paul and Gene are both vastly underrated vocalists. Yeah, in the '70s when they were running around and jumping everywhere it wasn't the best, but when they could both really sing when they wanted to. This is evident on their Unplugged show.
Hell, as much as I love the original 6-7 KISS albums, Stanley's best vocal performances were all 80s-early 2000s shows.
