How great would it be if BREC lost tax revenue from the unincorporated parts of the parish and all of the cities within the parish excluding Baton Rouge?

The only Baton Rouge agency with more money sitting in an account not being used is the Parish library system. Both of these entities need to be gutted and reformed.

I support the bill to break up BREC. This is a step in the right direction.

Why? Because they know how to budget?

That’s not budgeting that’s hoarding tax payer money which is actually illegal.

It serves the parish, not the city.

Fine, but only residents from within city limits have rights to Santa Maria and Beaver Creek.

Not saying BREC is not overfunded and corrupt, and I certainly agree with defunding the library system. It's been worthless for years.

I’ve been to brec parks over 50 times since the pandemic started and I’ve seen a total of five employees.

Why are there so many people on their payroll, and what do they do?

The city of Zachary residents pay around 2 million per year in taxes to BREC. We aren’t getting that money back. Our BREC parks in Zachary are a joke. I would rather the city use the money as it sees fit.

Both the millages for BREC and the Library system are too high. BREC owns too much land in the parish. It should be forced to sell of at least 50% of that land. The Library system has built palatial buildings to house books that only a small amount of people actually read, should only have non- fiction books. If people want to read fiction they should have to pay for those themselves.

Allegedly $7 million has been invested over 5 years. However, y'all paid $10 million over that time.

Damn, your parents never took you to the local library to pick out some books to read? I don't mind helping pay for a public library system if it inspires a few kids to enjoy reading like it did for me.

they banked a lot of money in anticipation of building a new zoo but the metro council deemed the moving of a zoo as racist. I think the plan is now to renovate and add on to the old zoo so I'm sure that's going to drain a good bit of their reserves.

If it’s such a great idea then the people of EBR parish should get to vote on it. Running the bill this way is a cheap shot & plain wrong. Most of the politicians voting on this only come to the capital during legislative session. It’s ridiculous that they have a voice and the actual taxpayers do not.

You know the answer to that. Its a progressive controlled city with fraud and pocket lining everywhere.
The library and BREC systems are the progressive slush funds of EBR. Errybody gets a cut, except the taxpayers.

Hey genius, both of those are parish entities, not city entities.

I can understand if Baker, Zachary, and Central want to manage their own park systems. However, what is lost in the discussion is that the Central mayor was not informed of this move beforehand, and has no plan set up to run an independent park system.

I would like to think that this may be more of a ploy to bring to light the inequity of the use of funds being applied. In short, there is a billboard that is recently set up that shows that 40% of the budget goes to salaries and benefits for 1000 employees. That leaves 60% of the budget for operating cost, etc.

There are claims that it is racist by some of the black city council members. They are saying that Baker, Central and Zachary are all white communities that will pull income sources from the BREC budget. One, using the racist card one (ha, ha) too many times is self defeating. Two, Baker is close to 50/50 black/white.

Just my two cents.

I've always thought that EBR parish residents should get a discount to play at BC/SM.
