It appears we are delving into a timeline problem. When topics are debated/discussed based on a timeline both sides can find initial conditions or starting points to bolster their argument. For example it happens ALL THE TIME in the climate change debate. A specific example, the climate alarmist are starting with the U.S. wildfire record in the mid 60s. The mid 60s was the low period of burn acreage in the U.S. So of course their chart looks bad and they blame it on climate change. But if they would have started in the late 19th century when the forest service started recording burn acreage they would have to show the burn acreage during the 1930s and 40s which is 10 times the current burn acreage. That starting point shows decreasing burn acreage and nullifies their climate alarmist message.

The NYTs appears to be selectively picking their starting date. But to the common person who buys gas weekly or bi-weekly their starting date is the last time they purchased gas.
