Those interested in UK politics: history could be made today in Northern England

The Labour Party believes they will lose the constituency election in Hartlepool today, a seat they have held since 1944
Hartlepool is a white low income city that has historically been one of Labour’s safest seats
Would be an utterly embarrassing outcome for the party

quote:
Fewer than half of recent Labour voters in Hartlepool say they will back the party in Thursday’s crucial byelection, according to internal data based on the canvassing of more than 10,000 people, leading activists to fear a historic Conservative victory.
Labour insiders said polling from its ground campaign in the town showed only about 40% of the party’s previous supporters had pledged to vote for its candidate, Paul Williams.
Such an outcome would deal a significant blow to Keir Starmer’s leadership and a decisive Conservative win in a north-east England seat that has elected a Labour MP at every parliamentary election since 1944.

The internet has quickly outdated national and regional borders.
Fitting in the internet with this archaic system will be really interesting moving forward. Political "upsets" like this or the election of Trump will happen more frequently - on both sides.

Would be amazing if Brian Rose wins the Mayor race

What time should we know the results? It's 9pm there isn't it? So in the next couple of hours?

Labour dumped poor white Britons in the 90s, for the same reason the Democrats dumped poor white voters. Its taken a long time for that decision to shake out.

Keir Starmer is just as weak and stupid as Corbin
It's really amazing how across the globe in Europe and US low income white traditional Labors/Dems are voting conservative. And then high income whites are voting for super progressive policies.
Let's see if the GOP adapts to Trumos message across national, state and local elections. It's there for them to take these type of voters.

Has the labour party been allowed to manipulate or gut election laws like the left has done here?

aha! Behold the difference! If their Labour party was able to get every old pensioner in a nursing home to give them their vote to bring and got to canvass the housing projects and collect their votes, they would also be as successful as the dims

Local elections?
Posted on 5/6/21 at 4:16 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
This isn't surprising. The Tories won Blyth Valley in 2019, a seat in Northumberland (near Hartlepool) that had never voted for a Tory MP. The northeast of England is heavily white, heavily working-class and very much a hotbed of English nationalism. All areas of northeast England save for Newcastle voted to leave the EU. Labour thumbing their nose at the referendum outcome was the last straw.

I think Scotland will be independent sooner than later.
I remember watching a Bourdain Parts Unkown episode when he was in England in 2016 and they were talking about the Scotland independent refurenduk that was on the ticket it failed but it was like 52-48 vote not to leave GB. But the young crowd and younger generation voted in droves to leave so it's only a matter of time. They are just pissed England voted to leave EU. And want that EU gravy train to continue in Scotland.
It's sad because Scotland is beautiful. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and then the Highlands are unreal but they are basically in lock step with the Irish in terms of political leaning at this point and that is super pro EU and ultra left wing politics.
