Rainbow - Stargazer
I was a yuge Dio fan back in jr high in the early 80s, and I remember a friend's older brother playing this song on his Marantz in maybe '82 or '83.
I knew it wasn't a "Dio" (band) release, and always assumed it must've been a bootleg of 80's Black Sabbath...but to learn it was released in '76? And Richie on guitar?
Good Lord, that tune is epic af. Love to see these young kids on YT finding real music.

Dio's 2 records with Rainbow, and the live performances, have been favorites of mine for 30+ years. So much great material in a relatively short time. As much as I also love his later material I actually think it's his high mark between Rainbow, Sabbath and Dio.

Dio’s discography with his many bands is amazing. ‘Long Live Rock And Roll’ is one of my favorite all time albums. I have this album lying around somewhere in storage that I bought in the early 80’s. Don’t even remember if I liked it or not, but now I’m curious.

Just looked it up on Wiki:
“Carolina County Ball is the second studio album by the rock band Elf, released as an LP in 1974 on the MGM label. It was released in the United States and Japan as L.A.59. The album is the first feature bassist Craig Gruber. On some of the European releases of "Carolina County Ball", the first song is listed as "Carolina Country Ball" making this album somewhat of a collector's item.”
Been over 40 years since this sucker hit my turntable.

Makes me sad that my older sister's ENTIRE vinyl collection from late 60s thru early 80s were put in storage off Fla Blvd (her house was not yet completed) exactly 2 wks before the great flood.
(Neither the home she sold nor the new incomplete constr. in Watson flooded)
All were lost. Just sickening.

Man all my albums got ruined when we had a freaking pinhole leak in our ice maker line that was running through the ceiling. It collapsed one day while we were gone.
Although I already knew they were screwed the first thing we had to do was deal with the issue and clean up the mess. Later on I got back home after many beers with a friend and started going through the albums. Hadn’t played them in years and no longer even had a turntable but still, 38 years old and I cried like a baby. Of course the heavy buzz may have had something to do with that.
But yes, you used the best word possible. Sickening.

With regard to the OP, incredible song. I was actually more familiar with it at 14 years old when I bought the Monsters Of Rock from Castle Donnington album. Stargazer was the first song. Not Dio but Graham Bonnet did it some justice. Heard this version later and was like Wow!! Okay now. THIS is some awesome stuff.

Saw Rainbow as a warmup band to REO Speedwagon in 1978. Blackmore had some of the fastest fingers I ever saw, to this date, while remaining crisp with every note. Dio was off the frickin charts as a vocalist and Cozy Powell is a legendary drummer. Very lucky to have witnessed the greatness of this band.
